Biographical Information

Dr. Jarvinen earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary’s School of Psychology in Pasadena, CA. He completed his clinical internship in San Diego with Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. In addition to his work at Lighthouse, he works as an adjunct professor of psychology in Point Loma Nazarene University’s Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling program, and is a graduate fellow at the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center. He has published articles in the Journal of Psychology & Christianity and the Journal of Positive Psychology and has served as an academic manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Positive Psychology. He also has received specialized training and supervision in accelerated forms of psychodynamic psychotherapy (e.g., ISTDP) and in the integration of psychotherapy and theology.

Dr. Jarvinen’s diverse work experiences include positions with:

• Child abuse research with San Diego’s Child and Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC)
• Substance abuse research and intervention with UCSD’s Project Options
• Social/behavioral intervention, supervision, and parent training with Comprehensive Autism Services and Education, Inc.
• Psychotherapy with seminary students, pastors, and community clients with Fuller Psychological and Family Services
• Neuropsychological/dementia testing with UCLA’s Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior
• Intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization services with Huntington Hospital’s Della Martin Center in Pasadena, CA
• Teaching associate with San Diego State University
• Adjunct professor of psychology with Azuza Pacific University
